Visiting Saltaire with children

Sir Titus Salt's MausoleumSaltaire's main attaction is, of course, Salt's Mill. The Mill has 2 areas which children enjoy. Salts Diner on the second floor is child friendly and the books and poster shop on the same floor has a section of children’s books which most find appealing. There are other areas, such as “The Home”, in which you’ll be reminding them constantly to “look with your eyes and not with your hands”, and where close supervision is needed. In the Village, there are one or two shops which sell pocket money price gifts (the Information Centre, for example), but many children become bored with walking around streets, looking at buildings, however beautiful the buildings are. You could try going into the United Reformed Church, opposite the Mill – most children are impressed with the size and beauty of the interior. And they’re intrigued with the idea of the Mausoleum, the entrance of which you can view from inside the church. You will already know whether your child would find this enjoyably spooky or really scary!

Glenaire Children's PlaygroundRobert's Park is bounded to the North by Coach Road, and if you cross over you’ll see Glenaire children’s playground. at the bottom of Thompson Lane with swings, a slide and climbing frame. It’s worth mentioning that the row of shops on Coach Road at other side of Thompson Lane has a fish and chip shop. When they’re fed up with the playground, it’s just a short walk to the Glen Tramway and Museum - a funicular railway. Two carriages are linked by a cable, the ascending carriage counterbalancing the descending one. Children love to wave at the other carriage as it passes them. It’s just as it was in Victorian times, and for a small charge you can book a return trip.

Hirstwood LockThere’s one other attraction for children at the other side of the Village. Walk up Victoria Road to reach the busy Saltaire Road. Turn right and walk to Saltaire traffic roundabout. Alterntatively, you can walk along the canal, away from Shipley, until you come to Hirst Lock. Go across the bridge and follow the road up until you come to the main road. You will see The Old Tramshed Bar and Brasserie on the side of the roundabout. Adjoining the Old Tramshed, at the rear of the building, you will find Jimmy G’s. It describes itself as an Adventure Zone for children, with ball pools, slides, etc, all indoors. There are refreshments too. There’s an admission charge. It doesn’t have a website or email address right now, but you can phone them on 01274 533848. There’s ramped access for the disabled.
