Roger Clarke's Tourist Tips

Parking, toilets, access...

Getting the train here

At your next visit, think about using the train. The Station is close to the Mill on Victoria Road, the service is regular, and the quality of the carriages is (usually) very good.

Use the links on our travel page to check train and bus times, or use the AA route planner if you're coming by car.

Access

The Village is built in a valley and it’s uphill from the Mill to see the Village – not steep, but a hill nevertheless. The main street is also cobbled. If you intend to visit Shipley Glen, be prepared for a steep climb of about a quarter of a mile. The Shipley Glen Tramway is an easy alternative.

It’s possible to tour the Village in a wheelchair, but the pavements and cobbles aren’t very friendly in places. There are plans for disabled access to be built to the church, but its not there yet. The Mill has full access for the disabled and priority parking which should be accessed from the Victoria Road end of the Mill, but there are still Victorian cobbles to traverse. In Salt’s Mill, the 1853 Gallery has a delightfully antiquated lift to take you to the upper storeys.

Parking

I hope that you are as successful at finding Saltaire itself!  For free and plentiful parking when visiting Salts Mill, enter the site via Salts Mill Road.  If you bring your car into the Village, there are many parking restrictions and only 2 Pay and Display car parks which fill up very quickly.

Toilets

There are toilets in Salt's Mill on the ground floor, second and third floors, and they’re beautifully cleaned and maintained. The disabled toilets are at the end of the 1853 Gallery and on the second floor. In the Village, there are toilets in the Caroline Street car park, which are only just being renovated.

There are benches to sit on outside Victoria Hall and within the grounds of the Almshouses. There are also benches in Roberts Park which is a great place to picnic and perhaps watch some cricket. The Half Moon Café is found just beneath Sir Titus Salt's statue.
