21 penguins cycled from Leeds to Newcastle and back for Yorkshire Cancer Research (Go team penguin!)

There's still time to donate :

John BretherickFriends, colleagues, fellow competitors and good eggs who support charitable causes! Every once in a while a good idea comes along... this was not one of them!

On the 14th September we started our biggest challenge yet; 21 of us cycled 110 miles from Leeds to Newcastle, running a half marathon (The Great North Run), and then another 110 miles back, ALL DRESSED AS PENGUINS.

Everything raised is in support of Yorkshire Cancer Research. We set ourselves a big challenge to raise £50,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.  It’s a most worthwhile cause, with cancer unfortunately affecting most people’s lives either directly or indirectly.

The background blurb...

Penguathlon 2013 is a charity event taking place on September 14-16th 2013 in support of Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Loosely based upon a triathlon, the event will be officially started by Leeds Rhinos’ stars Jamie Peacock & Ian Kirke on the morning of the 14th at Headingley Rugby Ground.
From here, 22 hardy fundraisers will cycle 110 miles to Newcastle dressed in a ‘penguin outfit’ complete with beaks and flippers (custom cycle clothing custom designed & made by Spirit Cycling of Ilkley for the event)

The following day, the much more cumbersome 7 foot tall furry penguin suits will be broken out and worn whilst completing the Great North Run, before getting the bike gear on again for the return journey, this time finishing at Bar T’at in Ilkley.

So far, as part of fundraising and profile raising activity we’ve had penguins in a huge range of events whilst sporting their penguin gear, details below, as well as more ‘traditional’ fund raising events such as Race Night & Penguin Car Wash. We’ve secured sponsorship from businesses across the country and the support from local businesses has been fantastic with and Eco-Link couriers of Leeds donated a car for the event which will be an official Support Vehicle for the 3 days along with a van supplied by JD Cycles of Ilkley.

We have 1 Penguin Jersey signed by Alistair & Jonny Brownlee, another by the Leeds Rhinos squad and another by cycling legend Chris Boardman. These are all being auctioned, sold or put up as prizes as ways to raise funds.

The penguins themselves are mainly from Yorkshire, but we have a few more from further afield including a penguin migrating north for the event from Dorset.

All funds being raised are going towards the great charity that is Yorkshire Cancer Research and more details including how to sponsor any of the penguins or even buy fundraising Penguin merchandise, can be found on www.penguathlon.com

On the weekend of the event itself, the website will have a live GPS feed of the penguins’ location and if any cyclists wish to join up for a few miles, they are more than welcome.
Also keep an eye out on the BBC coverage of the Great North Run as the penguins will be speaking to Colin Jackson before the race starts
