Organisers of the Simply Saltaire exhibition, which will be launched on Monday 3rd May to raise funds for an education centre at the Saltaire United Reformed Church, have been amazed by an anonymous donor who has given a bust of Sir Titus Salt for sale.  It is 12 inches high in unglazed porcelain or Parian Warestands and may have been a commemorative bust as it is dated 1877, the year following Sir Titus’ death.  There is a similar bust in a display cabinet in Victoria Hall.

The donor told us that her father had been given the bust by a very elderly lady in gratitude for his help in enabling her to continue to attend the church despite her infirmity, and for other acts of kindness.  Nothing more is known of the old lady or her family.

It is very timely that the Antiques Roadshow is to be filmed in the village at the end of April, and it is hoped that the bust will be valued there.

The Simply Saltaire exhibition will run from Monday 3rd May, and will be open daily from 2pm to 4pm until 30th May. On Bank Holiday Monday, 31st May there will be an auction of any unsold pieces at 4pm.

There is still time to donate a Saltaire-themed photograph or piece of artwork.
