NEW COURTS FOR SALTS TENNIS CLUB - AND OTHER NEWS...

It's a big step forward as Salts Tennis Club complete phase 2 of their development. Philip Davies (local MP) and Liz Wilson (Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association President) were on hand to open the new courts at Salts Tennis Club earlier in the year.  'It's a very proud moment, it's taken 13 years of work to get our club to this position'. 'Club members from past and present are here to celebrate the opening of our new courts, it's just a shame our club Chairman could not be here to see it as he is in bed with flu' said John Bretherick the clubs secretary and junior co-ordinator.

'We have worked with the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association and our joint junior tennis program with Titus Salt School has enabled us to build support with local sponsors such as Pace, Jack Penningtons, Illingworth McNair and Buxton Pickles, and funding bodies; the Shipley Area Committee and the Foundation for Sports and Arts to develop our club and add a 4th tennis court' John added.

The Salts community tennis program has grown over the last year and with the backing of Bradford Leisure Services, Shipley Area Committee, the YLTA and Club sponsors, Richard Senior (new head coach) has delivered 'affordable tennis coaching for all' providing 172 hours of tennis coaching in 8 primary schools and Titus Salt School. Over 1300 children had the opportunity to play tennis, with some excellent feedback.  Tennis events included beginner's coaching and tournaments that were held at Titus Salt School, Northcliffe, Lister and Myrtle Parks, and Salts Tennis Club.  With the support of the Shipley Area Committee free tennis summer camps were organised, with a record 76 juniors aged 5 to 11 attending one week, with 10 budding tennis stars joining the club as a result.  'It's been a great year' said Richard, 'we have all learned a lot, and are looking forward to expanding our tennis program with more schools added to the list, after school tennis clubs and more tennis coaches providing coaching and organising tournaments'.

Junior tournaments were held at Northcliffe park throughout the summer and Richard is now organising matchplay events at Salts Tennis Club on a Saturday morning 11-1pm that are open for any juniors to play matches against similar standard players.

Winter tennis coaching is now underway with mini tennis indoors at Titus Salt school on Monday and Wednesday evenings for 5 to 9 year olds and junior coaching on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings for the 10 to 16 year olds at Salts Tennis Club under the newly installed floodlights.  'We are also delivering FREE tennis coaching for juniors and their parents at the refurbished Temple Rhydding park courts on Saturday afternoons from 2-4pm' added Richard, 'Everyone is welcome, it's part of the Shipley Area Committee community tennis plan to get more people in the area active and have some fun at the same time'.

As part of the tennis in the community plan there is also a FREE tennis coaching course for Teachers and teaching assistants at Titus Salt school on the 30th November, with each school who participate receiving tennis equipment for their school worth over £500.  Next year there will also be a new tennis leaders training course for 14-18 year olds starting in January.

'We are not resting on our laurels' commented John, 'next year we plan more junior, adult and veterans open tournaments, silver tennis 'kids bring your grandparents' and for those who tennis is a bit too energetic, there will be the opportunity to play crown green bowls, so we can cater for all age groups'.  'We also plan additional floodlights and the creation of a winter league to be hosted at Salts.

CHARITY JUNIOR TENNIS EVENT A HIT!

A charity event fostered by Salts Tennis Club and refereed by Club Coach Richard Senior proved to be a great success as over 20 juniors from across the area took part in the Marie Curie Cancer Care Junior Tennis Tournament on Sunday 20th September 2009 at Northcliffe Park, Shipley.  All competitors enjoyed a fun, competitive singles event with all proceeds donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.  The event was a round robin with competition in the spirit of the event.   The day proved to be especially good for Alexandra Farrar (13) from Cleckheaton Tennis Club who triumphed in both 18 and Under and 15 and Under Girls events.  Organiser Richard Senior said 'Alexandra  played  well  today and the event in general shows the need for more juniors to compete and play matches.' 'All the children thrived on matchplay and this kind of event will keep their interest in the game' he added.
With this in mind Senior has introduced a Matchplay event on Saturdays at Salts Tennis Club 11am-1pm every week open to all juniors wanting more matchplay opportunities. 'One week we had over 75 children attend a Shipley Area Committee sponsored event' Richard Senior (head coach) commented, 'it was excellent fun and on the whole the weather was kind to us, and when it wasn’t we had some fun playing games and watching video's in the clubhouse.'  Jim Dyer (club chairman) added 'this was a magnificent turn out for the time Richard has been at Salts, and he is now growing the opportunities for children to play the game in local primary schools, our new Mini Tennis Academy indoors at Titus Salt School, and at the tennis club'.

The new winter tennis program has now commenced with mini tennis indoors at Titus Salt school on Monday and Wednesday evenings for the 5 to 9 year olds and junior coaching on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings for the 10 to 16 year olds at Salts Tennis Club.  Richard is also organising coaching and matchplay events at Salts Tennis Club on Saturday mornings.  'We are also delivering FREE tennis coaching for juniors and their parents at the newly refurbished Temple Rhydding park on Saturday afternoons from 2-4pm' added Richard, 'Everyone is welcome, it's part of the Shipley Area Committee community tennis plan to get more people in the area active and have some fun at the same time'.
