Step up to Saltaire for a fascinating Walking Conference

This event has now been cancelled. An event looking at the economic and environmental benefits of walking is being held on Saturday 14th March at the Victoria Hall in Saltairebetween 10.45 and 3.00.  Organised by SCENe, a business association linked to the Settle-Carlisle rail corridor, the conference is open to anyone with an interest in walking or the dales and offers a day of interesting speakers and plenty of food for thought.

One of the keynote speakers, Colin Speakman, from Transport for Leisure, is himself a keen and experienced walker who has written several books and guides about walking in the Yorkshire Dales and Europe.  He is passionate about walkers making links with public transport systems, and has studied the contributions walkers make to a prosperous countryside and the allied economic and social benefits that brings to the communities.

Tim Thom Senior Conservation Officer at the Yorkshire Dales National Park will take a Virtual Walk on the Wildside – an illustrated tour of the park which is so loved by walkers.  He will explain the various conservation projects the park has initiated, show the creatures they are protecting, and look at how the National Park is working with various partners and users.  Ruth Annison from Wensleydale Railway will be talking about guided walks from stations and there’s a look at Richmond Walking Festival. There’s a fascinating insight into the baggage carriers, such as Brigantes, who have transformed the lives of those doing long distance walks.

Gillian Howells, Chair of SCENe said “We hope a lot of people will come to the conference as it offers a fascinating look at walking from a different perspective.”  The event which costs £15 starts at 10.45 and has been timed to fit in with trains from Leeds, Bradford, Skipton, Morecombe and Carlisle.  Lunch is provided.  To book a place or find more information contact Gillian Howells on 01748 825362.
