Walkers from around the country are gearing for the start of the walking season in Spring to tackle a new long distance route which starts in Saltaire.

A Dales High Way is the name of a 90-mile long distance walk across the glorious high country of the Yorkshire Dales. It was devised by Saltaire couple Tony and Chris Grogan.

The route starts from Saltaire in West Yorkshire and crosses some of the finest and most spectacular scenery the Dales has to offer, finishing at Appleby-in-Westmorland in the lush Eden Valley. The return journey is made on the famous Settle to Carlisle line – the most beautiful railway in England.

Dales High Way guide bookThe new route was launched in September 2008 at Saltaire Festival and a guide book was published to accompany the launch. The book has already received excellent reviews in newspapers and magazines, particularly amongst walkers. It also featured prominently in the November 2008 issue of the Dalesman magazine.

An up-to-date accommodation guide is found on the supporting website which also carries route details, a regular en-route news section and a walkers discussion forum.

Tony said: “The book is selling really well, particularly as walkers gear up for the 2009 walking season in Spring. We know a number of walking groups are planning to tackle it this summer and b&b’s along the route are already taking bookings. Some people have already walked parts of the route but we don’t yet know of anyone who has completed the walk.”

The Route Guide is available from Allan Austins and Saltaire Books. It is also available in Yorkshire Dales National Park Tourist Information Centres, through Friends of Settle-Carlisle Railway shops and in many good bookshops along the route. It can also be bought online via the official route website
