The York Waits are the official town band of York as it was during its Tudor heyday. Between them, members of the group play most of the wind and stringed instruments that a town musician of the 1500s would have been expected to master, such as the shawm, sackbut, crumhorn, recorder and lute. Dressed in Tudor costumes, they perform music by the leading composers of this period, including many pieces attributed to Henry V111 himself.
The concert, promoted by the Early Music Shop, located in Salts Mill, Saltaire, is part of the Saltaire Festival events and will be particularly appealing to children studying the Tudor Period - showing in a musical colourful way, that the Tudors weren't so terrible after all! The music is accompanied by narration making use of material gathered from letters, diaries which paint a vivid portrait of Henry, from the early days of his reign to its dramatic centrepiece, the rise and fall of Anne Boleyn.
