FROM SETTLE TO SALTAIRE: TOURIST INDUSTRY TOURS SALTAIRE
On Thursday, 10 April, over 40 people in the tourist business from along the Settle Carlisle Railway enjoyed a trip to Saltaire. The trip was arranged by David Allison of Tracks North for the Settle Carlisle Enterprise Network (SCENe), to provide an insight into Saltaire as a tourist destination. The group arrived by train, of course!
The visit was enlivened by presentations by “Mrs Dinah Stewart” (the haughty housekeeper of Sir Titus Salt, played by Hattie Townsend), “Mrs Ellen Dooley” ( a good-hearted, common mill worker played by Maria Glot) and the stern and righteous “Rev. David Cowan” played by Roger Clarke. In costumes of the Salt era they lead the group around Saltaire describing the church, houses, community hall and mill. The group offer these services as Salts Walks and ensure visitors to this World Heritage Site get the most from their visit.
John Swineburn, Bradford Tourism marketing manager, addressed the group over lunch and spoke about the tourist attractions of Bradford.
