Saltaire History Club Meeting - 17 May 2007
Message from Dave Shaw

Greetings All. Arrangements are now in place for our next meeting on Thursday 17 May, and I'm pleased to report that we have a really good programme in store. The meeting will start as usual at 7 p.m. in the Resource Centre, Shipley College, Exhibition Rd.

We'll be featuring items on not one, not two, but on three centuries of local history:

1. New Hirst Mill

Before Saltaire was built there were in fact water-powered mills at various points along the River Aire. Bill Hampshire, author of "The Water Mills of Shipley" will be giving a presentation on the 18th century New Hirst Mill. Having heard Bill explain the history of the site, you are sure to want to visit it at leisure to see for yourself.

2. Saltaire people with deep local roots

We are fortunate that there are still living in the locality families who can trace their ancestry back several generations, to the very early days of working and living in mid 19th century Saltaire. In the second half of our meeting we will be having a round table discussion with some of these folk, including one local who has an ancestor who actually worked in Dixon's Mill - the water-powered mill that stood on the site before Titus Salt built his Palace of Industry.

3. The Photo Album of the 1953 Salts Mill trip to Blackpool

You will no doubt be familiar with the film of the trip (the film has now been transferred to DVD and we hope to feature a copy of it). There is also a superb photo album of the event, and the 60 photos it contains have all been scanned and will be on display. The display gives viewers a better chance to recognise familiar faces from 54 years ago, and we are hoping that lots of newcomers will come along to put names to the faces.

Hope you can make it - look forward to seeing you on the 17th!
Best regards
