The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar

Saltaire Living Advent Calendar

The Living Advent Calendar has come to Saltaire. Stefan Weigert, a Physicist at Hull and York University, and artist, Sabine Jeanne Bieli, thought of the idea and imported it to Hull. Saltaire will open its first window at the Primary School in Albert Road on Friday 1st December with a window made by the five-year-olds in their art class. Each night another window will open and light-up at dusk with a seasonal scene. Victoria Hall and Shipley College have joined forces for the 15th December and a window created by their design students will coincide with the celebrations of the extensive refurbishment of Victoria Hall.

Stefan and Sabine size up one of the windows at Salts Mill. The spectacle will end with a fantastic window, designed by Stefan and Sabine, at Salts Mill on the 24th December. Many of the windows will remain lit until Twelth Night. You will be able to walk around the village to see each of these in the build-up to Christmas.

The addresses for the windows are posted on this website and a map will be available from the tourist office and other venues around Saltaire. You can also follow the progression of the windows each night when a picture of them will be shown on this website.

Living Advent Calendars are a tradition practised in villages in Switzerland and the idea was successfully taken up in Hull in another conservation area called 'The Avenues'. The Hull advent calendar is in its sixth year and you can see our sister project through this website.

We would like to thank all of those who have enthusiastically participated and helped with special thanks to Stefan Weigert and Sabine Jeanne Bieli, Claire Thornton, Claire Townsend, Maggie Silver, and Saviour Pirotta for all his work on the leaflets, and Pamela Reynolds of the Saltaire Village website for hosting the advent calendar web pages, which have been beautifully designed by Chrys Bavey of our sister project in Hull. Happy Christmas.

Victoria and David Worsley
