Eco warriors and anyone concerned with responsible household waste disposal - mark Wednesday 25 October in your diary. Bradford Council is holding an "eco-fair" in Exhibition Hall, Saltaire on this date between 1 pm and 8 pm. Those attending have the opportunity to meet the council's new environmental task force which has been set up to transform the appearance of the district.
Bradford and sorrounding district will have to formulate a plan to reduce the amount of rubbish being dumped in landfill sites, or face huge fines from the Government. A new waste treatment plant or incinerator will need to be built to solve the problem, especially as domestic waste is expected to double in the next 20 years. Next year the council plans to award a contract to a private business to deal with 75,000 tonnes of waste over the next four years and also find a long-term business partner to take on a £400m contract to deal with Bradford's waste for 25 years.
The options to be debated will be: burning waste in a giant incinerator and using the energy released to produce electricity gas or to heat water; autoclaving which involves treating the waste in a giant pressure cooker to produce material which can be sold as packaging or fuel; or mechanically treating waste so it can used as fuel.
The eco fair will also have 30 exhibitors who will be demonstrating environmentally-friendly products and community groups will be showcasing projects which make Bradford a cleaner and greener place to live.
