I think it is a really good idea to share 1911 census findings for Saltaire.
In 1911 my Great Grandfather, Stainfirth Coultas (age53), was living in 21 William Henry St. Saltaire. Others in the same house were his second wife Mary Ann (nee Ollerenshaw), my Grandfather Milfred (age 22), my Great Uncle Lawrence (age 11) and Ethel Coultas (age 19) who in spite of the surname, I think was Ethel Ollerenshaw.
Stainfirth had been a tram driver but in 1911 he was a tram cleaner. Mary Ann was an office cleaner, Milfred was a wool warehouseman and Ethel was a sauce packer.
The next year, 1912, Stainfirth died and Milfred married Mary Ann Miller who lived at 8 West Church Street, Windhill, Shipley along with her widowed Mother, Eliza and her brother Herbert ( her Father had been George Miller). Mary Ann was a wool twister, Eliza was a worsted drawer and Herbert (12) was a part-time worsted doffer. I haven't found West Church St. on a map.
Milfred & Mary Ann were married at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Windhill, Shipley - I don't know where this is/was either.
In 1911, Stainfirth's brother Albert (42) lived with his wife Miriam Jane (38)(known as Jinney) at 65 Victoria Rd., Shipley. He was a Timekeeper. In 1901 they were living at 46 Victoria Rd., Shipley and he was a gatekeeper at a worsted mill.
I'm not very clear about where Saltaire ends and Shipley begins but I see from the map that they are in the same area.
My Grandparents were very proud of Saltaire. When I was a child in Calverley they made sure that I knew about Titus Salt and one day I hope to visit Saltaire once again.
I would be interested to hear of any other Coultases in the area.

Hi there,
i have used the 1911 census and have found interesting info pertaining to my grandmother, Kathleen. She is recorded as living at 39 Dove st. with the Crossland family head: William Hartley Crossland a Wheelwright & Anne Crossland and their children. My grandmother was 3 months old and was living their with her birth mother Emily Aspinall from Elland. Subsequently she was adopted and raised by the Crossland's. Interestingly there is another baby residing at the premises too a Jack Norman aged 2months, and described as a Nurse child. Does any one have further information relating to this Crossland family which they would like to share.
Cheers,
Patricia

The official 1911 UK census website is now up and running. Users can access its contents at a modest charge. It provides a huge new data base of Saltaire social history...
This is an open invitation to all researchers to share their findings on Saltaire with others through this Chatboard.
To visit the site go to http://www.1911census.co.uk/
Good hunting!
