Object to the Saltaire bypass plans
Mark Taylor-Batty of the Saltaire Village Society has written a letter of objection to Bradford Council's bypass plans for Saltaire. This letter can be sent to Councillor Anne Hawkesworth on-line - all you have to do if fill in your name, address and email address.
If you don't know about the bypass - you can read the basic facts by following this link. http://www.saltairevillage.info/Protect_Saltaire_0002.html
There's also information on UNESCO and Saltaire's status as a World Heritage Site.
You can fill in the form by following another link on that page.
Or - go straight to the form and send it to Anne Hawkesworth. (You can also send your own letter of objection - her email address is anne.hawkesworth@bradford.gov.uk )
This is the letter you will send:
Dear Councillor Anne Hawkesworth,
At a meeting with Saltaire Village Society committee members on 17 January you stated that “If I lived in Saltaire, I think I would like a tunnel to start at one end and go right under. I can’t see why that upsets people.” I strongly disagree with your statement and I would like you to register my objection to the proposed bypass.
I am upset by the current proposals to put a tunnel through the World Heritage Site, a road through the Heritage Site’s buffer zone, through the Leeds/Liverpool Canal conservation area and running alongside woodland designated ‘Ancient and Semi-Natural’. I will be upset by the damage to the environment, the damage to tourism and the damage to local businesses that this road and tunnel will inevitably cause. I will be upset by the damage to the view from Shipley Glen. I will be upset by the roar of traffic when I want to spend a peaceful afternoon in Roberts Park in the summer. I will be upset by the Council’s failure to address their responsibilities towards the environment and sustainable traffic solutions. A single-carriageway road, which is being proposed, will not alleviate the traffic on the Saltaire and Bingley Roads and will therefore multiply the air and noise pollution from traffic and not reduce it. This upsets me too. Please reconsider this proposal, and withdraw plans for a bypass that does not bypass this valuable village.
Yours faithfully, etc.
