Shimu sells an exclusive range of oriental furniture, handcrafted in China from solid elm wood. The range includes reproductions of classic designs from China’s Ming dynasty, as well as more contemporary pieces inspired by the period. Each piece is produced using traditional Chinese joinery and comes in a choice of black lacquer or a more natural finish to show the beauty of the wood itself. Other pieces are hand painted with designs that have been used to decorate Chinese furniture for centuries.

Shimu also imports antique furniture from China, each piece being carefully selected for both its form and functionality in a modern home. The antiques are sourced from all over China and are carefully restored to bring them back to their former beauty while maintaining the patina that has formed over decades, and which helps to give each piece its individual character. The collection is ever changing but includes walnut cabinets from Gansu in western China, painted cabinets from Shanxi and Tibet, and plainer pieces in elm and camphor from northern China.

Initially an online and mail order business, Shimu opened its first showroom in Rawdon in 2006 before moving to its 1500 square foot premises in Saltaire in March 2008. Most of its range of elm furniture can be viewed there, as well as a large number of pieces from the company’s current antique collection. Also available are many smaller items including soft furnishings, lacquer ware, lighting and wall art - all carefully chosen to perfectly complement the furniture.
