New charity, shared purpose
Molly Kenyon describes the journey to creating Saltaire Stories: Past, Present and Future

Some readers may recall a consultation in 2009 about Saltaire’s educational potential.  It was a very lively event in the Glen Room at Victoria Hall.  People attended because they believed in the widest possible use of Saltaire as a “world classroom”.  A wide range of groups, businesses, schools and voluntary groups explained what they contributed to education about the World Heritage Site.  The significance of digital material was noted, such as the QR codes to be placed along the canal towpath by British Waterways (later the Canal & River Trust) and the huge amount of information available at

On Saturday 18th April, Saltaire Stories* will revive the Conversazione tradition at Victoria Hall - a unique mix of art, science and entertainment.

A rich variety of displays, taster sessions and informal activities
Selected items from the Saltaire Archive, with storytellers
Wurlitzer music and tours of the organ workings
A warm welcome for local residents and visitors of all ages

Dramatic sketches about our past, present and future - will open
the evening, followed by a dance to the music of the Sultans of Swing.

*Saltaire Stories: Past, Present and Future is the education programme of Saltaire World Heritage Education Association (charity no.1158756) aiming to help improve educational resources about the World Heritage Site.  Saltaire Stories was set up  by the Salt Foundation, Shipley College and  Saltaire United Reformed Church, and is committed to work alongside individuals and groups with similar aims.

We are holding an art exhibition which could include paintings, prints photographs, or sculpture which relate to the theme of:

Saltaire Stories: past, present and future

All art work must be accompanied by a sentence (144 characters max.) which states its relevance to this theme.

Preference will be given to those who live in the local area or have close connections with Saltaire. More >
