Report on Saltaire United Reformed Church restoration and future plans

Rob Martin writes: Here is a brief report on the progress of the restoration and future plans for the church.

At present we are in the process of raising £216,000 towards the refurbishment of the Mausoleum, the restoration of the Victorian church windows, and the cleaning and restoration of the statues. As of today we are about £15,000 short of our target. However our English Heritage grant specified that work had to be committed within six months and that time is now up. As a result we are planning to start work shortly on the windows and the Mausoleum, but not the statues. A grant application is outstanding to attempt to get a contribution towards the statues but that may or may not be successful, we will not know until October. We hope to be able to raise the money one way or another to give the sculptures of Sir Titus Salt and the Angel Gabriel overlooking his tomb but if the money is not forthcoming this may need to be postponed for some time.

Meanwhile we are planning to start the decision process of the improvement of the lower room facilities. This will include a consultation exercise involving schools and the local community as to what is best suited to fulfill the needs that we have in mind. At that point we will undoubtedly be involving the Saltaire Learning group in the process. What is reasonably certain is that the later phases will include the provision of disabled access to all levels of the church, better toilet and kitchen facilities, and accommodation for church and community activities.

Looking at the agenda, I can report that we have considerably reduced the size of our appeal banner at the front of the church with the signage regulations and would encourage others in the World Heritage Site to do like wise. I have indicated to the Henry Moore Foundation that we would welcome an exhibition of sculptures during a future Saltaire Festival within the church. They are booked up to at least 2015 at present.

Members may have noticed that the church car park has now provided facilities for parking for visitors to Saltaire. This has been done with co-operation with the Visitor Information centre who are providing parking tickets at £3 for a full day or £2 for a half day. This money less a small admin charge that the Information centre will have will be paid directly into the restoration project fund. (So park there and we might afford those sculptures after all!) Naturally there is no charge for parking for church related activities, services, concerts there etc.

Cheers
Rob

FULL PROGRAMME
Foreword by Rob Martin, (Chair; Saltaire Learning and Saltaire Village Society).
This is the first time that we have celebrated World Heritage Day in Saltaire. I suspect it won’t be the last, it seems to have caught the imagination of everyone and many individuals and groups are participating in the celebrations...

Scoping the Educational Potential of Saltaire World Heritage Site

In June 2009 CHE Associates, Abigail Hackett, Kathy Cremin and Jael Edwards, were commissioned by Bradford Metropolitan District Council to carry out a research and scoping exercise to explore the educational potential of the Saltaire site through wide consultation with local teachers and trainee teachers, partner organisations already delivering learning at the site and other World Heritage Site (WHS) and UNESCO staff. The project was funded by an English Heritage Regional Capacity Building Grant and delivered in partnership with Education Bradford.
